One of the biggest problems with blogging is that it takes time to gather ideas and write them out. With Google penalizing those websites that are producing low quality content, content writers have more pressure on them to produce the best quality content for people. It’s no longer simply to write out your thoughts on paper because you have to really out-shine your competition. For me, writing close to 10,000 words can be a difficult task, especially when I’m involved in various different projects at one time. However, I have some fundamental strategies I apply to my blogging every day that helps me avoid getting burned out working 50-60 hours per week.
For those of you working the same pattern and having a hard time managing, here are some awesome strategies to help you stay focused and NOT get burned out. These strategies have helped me stay grounded working roughly 9-10 hours a day, Monday-Sunday.
One reason people get burned out is because they feel what they’re doing is NOT making a difference. Being discouraged will cause you to lose focus and become negative toward your work. If you NO longer are enthusiastic toward your work, then you won’t have the drive to continue. Whenever I work, I avoid all negative contact especially those who have nothing good to say about my efforts. Personally, you’re always going to have people discourage you because you’re doing something they wish they were, so keep your distance. Applying this strategy is not difficult and you should follow this approach.
First, if you’ve been blogging for years, then you’ll know who is on your team and who’s not. Next, you should avoid leaving your work when you are in the middle of content writing. I’ve noticed I get the most work done when I’m in my zone, however, if I leave, then I’ll be distracted easily. It’s even worse if I leave and run into discouragement along the way from fellow colleagues, etc.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. If you don’t love what you’re doing, you won’t succeed. You’re NOT going to spend hours working on something you hate doing. You have to be in a profession that you love learning about and sharing with others. Personally, passion is the driving force when you have NO other motivation left. I’ll tell you things are going to get tough, no matter what type of business you’re in, so you have to keep pushing forward.
I’ve noticed when you put hours into something you don’t love, then it definitely feels like work, but when you do something you’re passionate about, you’ll spend 10 hours doing it and it won’t feel like you’re working. Here’s something else. If you’re doing something for money, then you’re already off to a bad start. True passion is being involved in something without worry about the monetary value behind it.
Always Keep Goals
Every day, I write down my goals for the day because as I complete them, they act as motivation pushing me to work harder. I believe that motivation is the driving force behind working harder, so if you complete daily goals, it’s a great way to stay motivated. These goals don’t have to be massive because you are writing them each day, so, for example, things like…
- Complete 500 words
- Exercise for “1” hour
- Check emails
- Start new project
- Write another 500 words
As you go through each, checking them off, then you’ll get a push of motivation. These are all positive feelings, which is why they are so effective. Every morning or the night before, it’s important to write out what you’ll like to complete for the entire day. These can be work related or NOT, but if you have a solid work ethic, you’ll know what’s the most important to you. This brings me to my next point…
Know What Is Important
One reason I’m so effective in working long hours and not getting burned out is because I know what’s important. There are a lot of distractions throughout the day but I stay focused because I have work to do. I know this is my livelihood and without it, I’ll be in a worse place financially, emotionally, and mentality. I mentioned emotionally because I love what I do and NOT putting my 100% will give me a feeling of disappointment. Every day when I wake up, the first thing I do is write out my goals. This means writing out the most important to least and sticking to the game plan.
To make everything work, and for you to be successful, you have to prioritize, which, in other words, means to know what’s important to you at any given time. Knowing what’s important will allow you to create your list of goals and act as motivation to keep pushing long hours without getting burned out.
It’s important to always reward yourself so you know you’ve done a good job. If you’re working for someone, the reward comes in the form of monetary value like a pay check. However, many bloggers are in business for themselves so it’s important you reward yourself in a fashion that keeps you pushing those 50 hour weeks. I like to indulge by going out on the weekends after completing my daily workload. I start every morning around 7AM and finish by 7PM, so, on weekends, it’s the perfect time to go and have some fun.
Keeping a solid reward schedule is a great reminder that the hours you put in have some ROI and why you do what you do. Remember, the reward doesn’t have to be financial because it could simply be something that makes you smile, keeping you happy. This obviously depends on what you simply love to do!
